Basilica of Sant’Ambrogio

One of Milan's oldest and most important churches

Founded in the 4th century by Milan's patron saint, this Romanesque masterpiece holds nearly 2,000 years of history and sacred art.

The Basilica of Sant'Ambrogio is one of the most ancient churches in Milan, founded between 379 and 386 AD by Saint Ambrose, who would become the city's patron saint. The current Romanesque structure dates primarily from the 11th and 12th centuries and is considered a masterpiece of Lombard Romanesque architecture.

The church features a striking atrium, two bell towers of different heights (one built by monks, the other by canons), and a beautiful interior with golden mosaics, ancient sarcophagi, and the famous golden altar (Altare d'Oro) from the 9th century. The crypt houses the remains of Saint Ambrose alongside the martyrs Gervasius and Protasius.

Adjacent to the basilica, visitors can explore the Museo della Basilica di Sant'Ambrogio, which displays religious artefacts, tapestries, and architectural fragments spanning centuries of history.

Walking distance from Lancaster Hotel: approximately 25 minutes (750m), an easy walk through the historic streets of Milan.
