Civic Aquarium
One of Europe's oldest aquariums in an Art Nouveau gem
Hidden within Sempione Park, Milan's Civic Aquarium combines stunning Liberty-style architecture with fascinating marine life displays.
The Civic Aquarium of Milan (Acquario Civico di Milano) is one of the oldest aquariums in Europe, opened in 1906 for the Milan International Exposition. The building itself is a masterpiece of Art Nouveau (Liberty) architecture, designed by Sebastiano Locati and featuring decorative ceramic tiles depicting marine creatures.
Located at the edge of Sempione Park, the aquarium houses over 100 species of fish, crustaceans, and molluscs from both freshwater and marine environments. The exhibits focus primarily on Italian aquatic ecosystems, including Mediterranean species and freshwater habitats from Lombardy's lakes and rivers.
Despite its compact size, the aquarium offers an engaging experience for visitors of all ages. The building also houses a specialized library dedicated to marine biology and hosts educational workshops and temporary exhibitions throughout the year.
Walking distance from Lancaster Hotel: approximately 17 minutes (600m), easily combined with a visit to Sempione Park and the Arch of Peace.
