The Arch of Peace
The Arch of Peace
A majestic neoclassical triumphal arch
Marking the entrance to Sempione Park, the Arch of Peace is one of Milan's most photographed landmarks and a symbol of the city's rich history.
The Arch of Peace (Arco della Pace) is one of Milan's most iconic neoclassical monuments, located at the northwestern edge of Sempione Park. Commissioned by Napoleon in 1807 to celebrate his victories, the arch was completed in 1838 under Austrian rule and rededicated to peace.
Standing 25 metres tall, the monument features stunning marble reliefs depicting historical scenes and is crowned by the impressive Bronze Chariot of Peace (Sestiga della Pace), drawn by six horses. The arch marks the beginning of Corso Sempione, the historic road connecting Milan to Paris through the Simplon Pass.
Today, the area around the Arch of Peace is a popular gathering spot for locals and visitors alike, especially during sunset when the monument is beautifully illuminated. The surrounding piazza often hosts markets, events, and outdoor activities.
Walking distance from Lancaster Hotel: approximately 5 minutes (450m), making it an ideal starting point for exploring Sempione Park and the Sforza Castle.
