The Navigli (Canals)

Milan's historic canal district

Once a vital waterway system, the Navigli today offer a picturesque setting for aperitivo, art, and authentic Milanese atmosphere.

The Navigli district is centred around two historic canals: the Naviglio Grande and the Naviglio Pavese. These waterways were once part of an extensive canal system that connected Milan to Lake Maggiore and the Ticino River, used for transporting goods — including the marble for the Duomo — for over five centuries.

Today, the Navigli district is one of Milan's most atmospheric neighbourhoods, lined with colourful buildings, artisan workshops, vintage shops, and countless bars and restaurants. The area comes alive during aperitivo hour, when locals and visitors gather along the canal banks to enjoy drinks and watch the sunset.

On the last Sunday of each month, the Naviglio Grande hosts a popular antique market featuring over 400 vendors. The district is also known for its vibrant nightlife, live music venues, and the artistic heritage of the traditional case di ringhiera (balcony houses).

Walking distance from Lancaster Hotel: approximately 40 minutes, or 15 minutes by taxi. Also accessible via Metro Line 2 (Porta Genova station).
