The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II

Italy's oldest and most elegant shopping arcade

A masterpiece of 19th-century architecture connecting Piazza Duomo to La Scala — and home to Milan's most luxurious boutiques and historic cafés.

The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is one of the world's oldest shopping malls and an architectural icon of Milan. Designed by Giuseppe Mengoni and opened in 1867, the arcade features a stunning glass and iron roof, intricate mosaic floors, and ornate decorations celebrating Italian unification.

The cruciform gallery connects Piazza del Duomo to Piazza della Scala, creating an elegant passage through the heart of Milan. Its shops include luxury brands such as Prada, Louis Vuitton, and Gucci, alongside historic establishments like the Savini restaurant and the Camparino bar, where the famous Campari aperitivo was first served.

A popular tradition invites visitors to spin on their heel three times on the bull's testicles depicted in the floor mosaic beneath the central dome — said to bring good luck. The gallery's cafés offer prime people-watching spots, especially during the evening passeggiata.

Walking distance from Lancaster Hotel: approximately 30 minutes, directly through the city centre to Piazza Duomo.
