The Duomo

Cathedral of Milan

The magnificent Gothic heart of Milan: Italy's largest church and a masterpiece of Gothic architecture — the Duomo dominates Milan's skyline with its forest of spires and the golden Madonnina.

The Duomo di Milano is the largest Gothic cathedral in Italy and the third-largest church in the world. Construction began in 1386 and continued for nearly six centuries, resulting in a unique blend of Gothic, Renaissance, and Neoclassical elements. The façade alone features over 3,400 statues, 135 gargoyles, and 700 figures.

The cathedral's interior is equally impressive, with five naves, 52 pillars representing the weeks of the year, and stunning stained glass windows that create a mystical atmosphere. Don't miss the archaeological area beneath the cathedral, revealing the remains of an early Christian baptistery.

The highlight for most visitors is the Duomo Terraces — the cathedral's rooftop. Accessible by stairs or lift, the terraces offer an unforgettable experience walking among the Gothic spires with panoramic views of Milan and, on clear days, the Alps. At the highest point stands the golden statue of the Madonnina, the symbol and protector of Milan.

Walking distance from Lancaster Hotel: approximately 30 minutes, at the heart of Milan's historic centre.
