Sforza Castle
Sforza Castle
A Renaissance fortress housing world-class art collections
One of Europe's largest citadels, Sforza Castle was home to Milan's ruling dynasties and today houses museums with works by Michelangelo and Leonardo.
The Sforza Castle (Castello Sforzesco) is one of Milan's most impressive landmarks, a vast red-brick fortress originally built in the 15th century by Francesco Sforza, Duke of Milan. The castle was later expanded and decorated by some of the greatest artists of the Renaissance, including Leonardo da Vinci and Bramante.
Today, the castle complex houses several museums known collectively as the Musei del Castello Sforzesco. Highlights include Michelangelo's final sculpture, the unfinished "Rondanini Pietà," ancient Egyptian artefacts, medieval arms and armour, decorative arts, and musical instruments. The furniture collection features important Renaissance and Baroque pieces.
The castle's courtyards are freely accessible and provide a peaceful escape from the city bustle. Beyond the main entrance, the Sempione Park extends toward the Arch of Peace, creating a green corridor ideal for leisurely walks.
Walking distance from Lancaster Hotel: approximately 5 minutes (250m), making it the closest major landmark to the hotel.
